  • Why Are You Crying In Your Lesson?

I don't know about you all, but I cry at the drop of a hat. Particularly while riding. It's somewhat annoying and embarrassing, but that this point I'm starting to just accept it as part of who I am. Any emotion of moderate intensity is hardwired to tears.

But that's ok! Both the best and the worst parts of horseback riding center around the fact that horses have their own brains, personalities, and feelings. It wouldn't be as much fun if they were robots (or at least not the same kind of fun. Robot horses does sound a little fun...) and we shouldn't expect ourselves to be robots either.

At this point I'm trying to make a better mindset about crying. Because quite frankly sometimes I'm crying because I'm mad that I'm crying. Also I feel embarrassed that I can't keep myself under control, and I feel like I'm a bad student because that must suck for the trainer.

Well now that I am teaching lessons myself I can tell you that I don't care one whit if you are crying or not. I DO care if you give up and stop trying. So cry all you want, but don't quit riding. Just keep on trucking along, you hot soggy mess, you.

So in the spirit of trying to remove some self-imposed stigma around crying, I've created this handy, Why Are You Crying In Your Lesson BINGO chart! Feel free to play along with me. First one to win gets a box of tissues?

Also if you are into printing things for your wall, you can download a more printer friendly version here. Best of all, it's totally FREE!

So next time if you get a little teary, weepy, or otherwise sniffly during your lesson (or anywhere else really) just tell yourself, "Yay I'm a human!" and shrug it off as "Oh well, it happens." We can both cry and get on with our lives simultaneously and as far as I'm concerned that's perfectly acceptable.

    Happy BINGOing!
